How to program a CURTIS DC series winding motor speed controller model 1204M-4201
1204M-4201 is a controller with "24V Working Voltage" option in the "1204M/1205M Series" of CURTIS, ideal for replacing an old CURTIS 1204 controller (1204-004, 1204-036 or other 1204 controllers). With the original controller model number provided by the buyer, the seller could identify more detailed information like "voltage", "current" and "throttle type". Then the controller will be programmed to the same setting as the original one of the buyer.
As the new member of 1204M / 1205M series winding motor speed controllers, the controller model 1204M-4201 has an extra "J5" terminal which offers new function "reverse signal input" or "main contactor driver" (corresponding controller parameter "Rev Input / Main Driver").
The parameter "Rev Input / Main Driver" determines the signal input at the controller’s J5 terminal:
- 0 = reverse input and main driver both inactive; use this setting if you are replacing an earlier model with no J5 terminal and want to leave the wiring as it was.
- 1 = reverse input active (see page 7, figure 5 of controller manual).
- 2 = main driver active (see page 7, figure 4 of controller manual).

- Put the MOLEX 4-Pin connector of programmer communicating cable into the mating connector of controller 1204M-4201.
- Connect the power source positive (B+) to the controller B+ main terminal and J1 terminal.
- Connect the power source negative (B-) to the controller B- main terminal.
- switch on the DC power source, then you will see the initiating screen (handheld programmer) or you can start to connect the controller (PC Station programmer).
- Entering the programmer manual, you may choose to:
- modify the controller parameters
- monitoring the controller status
- diagnosing the controller
- viewing the error history
Relatively, programming a 1204M-4201 is relative simpler than the programming process of other CURTIS controller models. For each different controller models, CURTIS configures a different terminal setting for programmers. But there are some points are common:
- A KSI (key switch input) terminal is always available for activating the controller.
- For activating the logical circuit of a CURTIS controller, a 24V DC power (max. the rated working voltage of controller) positive (B+) should be connected to the KSI terminal.
- For some controller models, a dedicated logical enable terminal is available, should also be feed by the same B+, like KSI.
- The DC power negative (B-) should be connected to B- terminal of controller, for constructing a complete working circuit.

As the key part of battery powered DC motor driving system, the motor speed controller's performance decides, in a great scale, the whole system's performance.
Incorporating with the newly developed digital technology and semi-conductor / microprocessor technologies, motor controllers are now much more compact in size with fully tangible functions, for example that we may set almost all vehicle functions through a single controller, forward / reverse, speed regulation, reverse alarm, brake, temperature inhibit, etc.
Along with the development history of motor controllers, many companies step in and out the stage. The successful players become industrial giants, like CURTIS Instruments, ZAPI Group, SEVCON, etc.
As the largest single market of battery powered vehicles, China offers the opportunity for all motor controller developers and manufacturers. After 40 years' economic opening, some national controller brands grows rapidly, to be able to stand should by should with the international brands. Surprisingly, you get very few quality complains in this huge electric scooter market. It is true that many scooter controllers are not good in quality if we go back to 10 years age. But here in China, the intense market competition has given serious lessons to the bad quality products. Imaging it, if you try to conquer a small city market (a really small city in China, maybe ranked between 200th and 250th largest city in dimension of population. In China, there are over 300 cities of population over 500,000.), the market capacity is 60,000 scooters. Then will you risk to lose the market share by providing the low quality product when there are other 20 or 30 competitors are vising to get into this market? The only solution of winner is to provide the products of the best price / performance ratio. So you can see, the market capacity is a key factor for Chinese market.
For international controller brands, like CURTIS and ZAPI (INMOTION), they moved in China, building their own factories and research facilities. But they are focusing on a different section of motor controller industry: large and medium-sized complex controllers with high technology threshold. These products serve for electric forklift, solar & wind power station, marine equipment, etc. Of cause, they tried also to enter economic controller market by providing products with simplified design and lower price, as well as their Chinese counterpart is trying to make some advanced technical products for the high-end market. For the moment, it is hard to say who will be the big winner. But one thing is certain, when the domestic market grows, Chinese buyers are seeking for better performance of their scooters, golf carts, electric cars and many other battery powered motor application.
